PETERSFIELD rugby club third team opened the season wearing new kit, kindly donated by Guy and Pam Cheeseman of Dowers Kitchens in Petersfield.

In traditional club colours, and traditional style and material, the new shirts were given by Guy and Pam, who over the years have generously supported the lower and less main stream club teams, such as the womans section.

They were also instrumental with the late Andy Millar in setting up the clubs now thriving youth section about 20-years-ago.

Sadly the new shirts were not enough of a boost to prevent Petersfield suffering a 22-7 defeat by Trojans Thirds, and their stream of ever bigger colts player replacements.

However Petersfield were in the game right until the last 15 minutes when finally Trojans superior weight in the scrum told and they shoved 'Field backwards to be awarded a pushover try.

Minutes later, with Petersfield attacking, a spilled ball was scooped up by a Trojans centre who had a clear run in from about 30 metres out.

The 'Field try came after Alex Groves dummied the defence and then used his strength and power to surge over from about 20 metres, he then kicked the extra points.

And as well as new shirts 'Field welcomed six new players to the team, South African brothers Pieter and Riaan Kleinhaus, who enjoyed themselves on either wing.

Centres Tim Tripp linked well with agile and determined winger Seb Linke from Liphook, and in the forwards flanker Chris West tackled out of his skin and was a revalation, as was prop Jamie Williams, who although under growing pressure held his own in the scrum, and was mobile in loose play.

Skipper Julian Blanks, who will allocate shirt laundry duties each week, said: "It was a good game, the veteran players were steady and effective and the new players certainly bought a new dimension to the team, if we can build on this its going to be a good season.

"I would also like to thank Guy and Pam for donating the shirts and having the neccessary embroidery work done for our use."

On Saturday, September 22, Petersfield Second and Third teams play at home at Penns Place, players to meet 1.30pm for a 3pm KO.
