In Coach Jon Walker’s view Field were definitely the better team!
Single tries came from Charlie Parish – his first-time fly at half - and Max Kemp with outside centre Danny Freeman scoring a brace, all just rewards for great work. Shane Brown also came to the fore with a couple of great try saving tackles; however, Field man-of the-match was Gerry Devlin who showcased his skills.
Allan McManus was his usual doughty self, Jim Coombes-Excell led from the front, and had an outstanding game in the loose along with Jez, Alex Hanna and ‘unsafe hands’ Ryan Morse.
John Ryder was destructive at scrum time and Sam Lucas once again showed real aggression with a couple of surging runs.
Ray Farr played with equal enthusiasm at centre and flanker, Harley Orr essayed some of his trademark surging runs and gave a masterclass in clearing out. Justin and Josh Whitear both had great games, with Josh, at full back, making one superb tackle that the crowd were sure he would miss.
Franko had a strong game at second row with some great handling. Lee Andrew Pickup made some great charges and Chris Tidy continues to develop well with at least one superb off load and good reading of the game to be in the right place at the right time to do the right thing.
Playing on the dark side, (of the pitch), Sam Rees showed his class with a lot of good support play and a number of strong runs. Ivan Cannings won two penalties for his side and put in a handful of stopping tackles. Carl Sharrock had another strong game at inside centre, crossing the gain line every time and, again in the coach’s view, Bryan Piggott had his best game this year. There was also a consistent game from Mark Scandrett although his American football-style hike between the legs raised eyebrows!
The 3s are in action at home on the 11th April.
