Following a late change and a voluntary drop from League 1 to League 2 South, Gosport and Fareham RFC had every reason to be optimistic as they turned out at Penns Place to face Petersfield colts.
The scene was set for a close match and as always, the teams did not disappoint.
It was a hard fought defensive game for Petersfield from the start with the bulk of play in their own 22. Gosport and Fareham broke through the line but ‘Field’s defensive clout held up the try.
Nevertheless, the visitors continued to fight until finally breaking down the defence after 16 minutes to score a try which they converted to go 7 points up.
Consistent pressure from the lads in red, white and green forced a penalty from G&F on 22’. Spencer went for the posts to start to close the gap.
Ever the showman, Chinnock weaved through the defence for Petersfield’s first try which was ably converted by Spencer to take “Peef” into the lead 10-7
In the dying moments of the first half a breakaway try on the wing dashed the hopes of a home team half-time lead. The conversion taking the score to 10-14.
Still, there were a lot of positives to take into the break and the team came out for the second half with renewed vigour.
6 minutes into the second half, Guthrie charged through for his first try of the season, followed by another 2 points from the ever accurate boot of Spencer.
A few minutes later, G&F returned the favour with their own try and conversion
With 20 minutes to go, Spencer again kicked the 3 points from another G&F penalty. The match was finely balanced at 20-21.
Despite battling from (and with) both sides for the final 20 minutes, the defensive play was excellent and no team were to concede any further points.
A very close but disappointing result for the Petersfield lads but it was very encouraging to see this year’s colts team competing where last year’s team had struggled to get a team out most weekends.
The lads and the coaches have done an awesome job to bring the squad together, get to know each other and put out performances they should be proud of.
There are four more matches in the league stages this season. Plenty of time to turn the tables!
