With most of the lads loaded into Dolly (the club minibus), we set off for the seaside in Bognor for the return leg of the league fixture.
Confident, following their previous hefty win over Bognor, the lads faced up the opposition away from home.
This time, things were not to be so easy. Petersfield went on the attack early. A sliced clearance kick from Bognor gave Ffinch-Mitchell the opportunity to scoop up the wayward ball and swerve his way through the defence for the first 'Peef try after just 3three minutes.
The lads kept the pressure on and won a penalty after 11 minutes, allowing Spencer to add three points.
Then, the game changed. Bognor was camped in the Petersfield half for the rest of first half. The 'Peef defence stood strong until a low rolling ball found its way over our line. Horsfall E looked as though he had done enough to ground ball to gain the drop-out before Bognor followed up with their grounding. The referee awarded the try which was duly converted. Score at half time 7-8.
The lads continued to pressure the Bognor line and the second half became a much more open game. Five minutes into the second half, the ball was moved wide to Spencer who drew in his opposite number before offloading to Waller for a winger's try.
The game stayed at 7-13 for a further 20 minutes before Petersfield was awarded another penalty from which Spencer loaded a further three points.
The match ended 7-16.
The boys are aware that they will need to raise their game for the return legs against Gosport & Fareham and Portsmouth, but the ability is certainly there.
The minibus trip back was certainly louder and more "tuneful"
Well done chaps
