With Gosport and Fareham pulling out of the scheduled league fixture, Cranleigh stepped in to the breach to meet Field’s 2nd XV for the second time in two weeks. In the two team’s first encounter Petersfield lost 12 - 5 in a close game.
The meeting on Saturday couldn’t have been more different as Field treated the home support to a try-scoring rampage. Team captain, Jamie Williams, was not only delighted with the convincing win but also keen to praise his players for their defence; “It is easy to lose focus on defence when you are comfortably in the lead”, he said, “I am very pleased that we maintained our focus throughout and managed to stop Cranleigh scoring.” Williams also praised Cranleigh for stepping in to the breach at such short notice.
No-one at the club is getting carried away by this result - tougher times will come for Petersfield’s 2nd XV - but the team will build on the positives from this impressive performance and will work hard to improve areas of weakness.
