2’s continue to progress with …
…. 52 - 5 win over Farnham
Fareham Heathens pulled out of the scheduled league match late in the week and so Petersfield 2’s accepted the offer of a friendly against Farnham 4’s at their grounds at late notice. The home side were waiting for their prop to arrive and in the spirit of rugby Field gave them a prop ( Corner showing sportsmanship ) so the game could proceed on equal terms.
Field were in control of the opening passages of play and structured rugby saw them play most of the first 10 minutes in the opposition half. It was a set piece scrum move that opened the way for the Field backs to move the ball nicely through the hands and ultimately Jenkins to touch down the first of what turned out to be 3 tries for him in the game and making him M.O.M. Farnham contested well for the ball and their forwards and centres made some progress with a few break through runs. Good tackling from the visitors managed to halt further ambition. Quick ball distribution to the Field fly half 10 Bremner enabled him to place a deft kick across the park for Munro to gather and score.
An attritional game saw a number of injuries and Farnham were down to 14 men and Field matched numbers and then down to 13, and again the courtesy observed . It did however mean that scrum’s became uncontested and 5 metres from the Filed try line Farnham took full advantage. Field were to score again before the half to end 19 - 5 to the good with Williams and Bremner having contributed by conversion for Field.
A lot of knock on’s in wet and windy conditions did not stop a competitive match and Farnham stuck to the task. Nonetheless it was Field who ultimately wanted the win more and sustained pressure forced gaps to appear and a number of break away tries including Jenkins, Bremner, Giles, Coombes-Excell and Sharrock. The latter having won the physical battle against the Farnham number 13.
In the final passages of the game with more injuries Field gave further players to Farnham to keep the match fair and more competitive than the score line suggested. Credit to all players who played their part and a thank you to those who played for their opposing team.
Final score Petersfield 52 - 5 to Farnham 4’s.
