… tough battle at Winchester

Having suffered a heavy defeat the week before Petersfield's second team, looking to rectify matters, travelled away to play Winchester third's in somewhat atrocious conditions; Icy wind and freezing rain on a pitch that by the end on the match probably would not have passed inspection at the start.

The first 15 minutes was played pretty much all in the Field half. The contest mainly at the breakdown was evenly matched and it was a deft kick over the defensive wall from the home side that saw them break through and take the lead. Field pressed back and after some phased play it was another kick into space that enabled Sharrock to finish on the left wing and making the extras easy by running round under the posts. Difficult conditions saw a few misjudged kicks and knock ons from both sides but very good rugby was still very evident in a solid contest. With neither side dominating the arm wrestle in the forwards play it was another wide move that nudged the score on; Davy scoring in the corner after hacking and chasing the ball from the half mark way mark. Despite resolute defence shown by the visitors sustained pressure from the home side saw them push over the line to score twice before the half time ended with them leading 15 - 12.

The attritional battle continued in worsening conditions and solid tackling across the park coupled with some well judged, and very well executed, kicking to touch enabled Field to repel Winchesters numerous onslaughts. Building on hard won yards with the forwards play the Field backs were to show great composure, goods hands, and determination to graft back into the game. Sharrock ending one such effort in the corner having broken tackles like a machine and also finishing off another foray after a break from Groves the full back who dummied a drop goal attempt.

Winchester were far from ready to allow the momentum to stay with Field and it was only solid defensive play and determination from pretty much every player on the team that managed to restrict Winchester to just one converted try having also managed to hold the ball up twice on the try line.

With the game finely balanced and 20 minutes still on the clock in an even contest it came down to who could keep their composure, pass the ball well, and ultimately who wanted it more. Barden sucking in forwards enabled broken play across the field and a nice line cut by Powell to finish off a flowing move. Bremner slotting a long distance conversion.

Sharrock with three try’s to his name was awarded Fields ‘man of he match’ although it could well have been Captain Bremner who marshalled the backs and made good use of the boot. It was fitting that a break from the base of the scrum by Kemp enabled a pop inside 2 on 1 attack allowing Bremner a slide in from 5 meters out to end the game 34 - 22 in favour of Field.

A proper contest of rugby that had a bit of everything for the purest as well as drama and excitement.
