Fields 2’s back to winning ways ..

Welcoming several Colts to the side to supplement experience; Field started the brighter of the two sides as they looked to use the youthful back line against a much bigger and heaver Overton team.

A break through the centre by Rankin saw Man of the Match Potter take it on before the ball went wide to Crosdil who touched down in the corner. The try fantastically converted from the touchline by Groves.

Overton came into the game with their driving off load forward orientated game and only sound defence by Hughes and Whitear keeping the visitors out.

As the forwards lugged it out in the middle of the park, Barden picked up and raced 20 yards before being cut down, the resulting scrum saw Field go through the phases before spreading the ball wide with Excell cutting in to touch down.

With their tails up, Field now went to sleep on the tackling front and a solid Overton forward drive saw them cut through the defence to touch down.The bigger Overton pack now came into their own, dominating at the scrum and playing to their driving maul strength. Good defence by Field, Potter and Simpson to the fore repelled several attacks before a 5 yard scrum on the Field line saw the ball span wide for Overton to score.

Field came back into the game and a line break by Rankin saw him go close, the resulting cover tackle causing injury and he had to leave the field, Sharrock entering the fray. Sharrock was immediately in the action with some great cover defence, but the Overton pack rolled on to touch down again

Field finished the half well when Butcher and Golding interchanged to make 20 yards, the ball taken on by Thomas as the visitors defence covered, Groves cut back in to score, converting his own try. HT: 19-15

The second half started badly for Field as Excell took an injury, Mayell coming on to replace and the matched edged from end to end, with both teams failing to find the final pass. A scrum on the Field 5 yard line saw Overton drive over to touch down. Groves now inspired the comeback with a little chip and chase, he passed to Marsh who drew the cover before putting Thomas in, Groves converting.

Field now looked to use their backs more as the bigger Overton team tired, Crosdil and Hughes had several good breaks, but it was a blistering run from Brophy who broke 2 tackles and sprinted 65m before being brought down that caught the eye, the resulting penalty slotted over by Groves. A break by Sharrock saw Crosdil go close, in doing so dislocating his finger to be replaced by McNee.

Field now exerted the pressure and a break by Devlin allowed Sharrock to go close in front of the posts. The resulting scrum was won by Overton, but under pressure from Devlin the fly half passed the ball into the post protector and Barden was there to bag a poachers try. Groves converting.

As the clock ticked down, Overton pack went for the kill and drove up the park, Field offside at the breakdown, they chose a scum and broke off to score in the corner.

With 5 minutes left and 7 points between the teams Overton pressed for the score, great defence by all including Potter, Marsh and McNee kept the visitors out and the match finished as Sharrock dump tackled the much larger Overton No. 8 seeing him knock on.

A good win for Field as they now look to kick start their league season.
