Maybe not quite as epic as Ireland's victory over NZ but in relative terms as impressive a display of resolve and commitment from Petersfield.
Field opened brightly enough playing the first 10 minutes in the Basingstoke 22 but failing to capitalise on possession and territory to score. Instead it was Basingstoke who were to touch down first against the initial run of play. Undeterred, Field were to press back numerous times and a move from near the halfway line with ball through the hands led to Devlin to step past one player and through another to open the score for Field. Field were to continue to press and soon after were to score on the other side of the park with Brophy making good yards and touching down.
The remainder of the first half was a bit of a dogfight midfield with the large Basingstoke forwards making headway and utilising their Fly Half to good effect to keep the match attritional and the scoreline tight. The Field pack were not to be pushed over and pressure led to Kemp touching down twice for Field to end the first half with Field in the lead, 22 to 17.
In the second half, good direction from Field Captain Bremner led to Field breaking through a few times in quick succession to forge ahead. Bremner scored himself and enabled Field's Man of the Match Tribe to score twice. Tribe it was who, already over the try line, unselfishly gifted the ball to Coombes-Excell to touch down in recognition of his efforts on the park. White made some hard yards and the ever-positive Golding and pack-leader Coombes-Excell ensured that the Field backs had ball to work with. Fair to say that Basingstoke were maybe somewhat shell-shocked but never gave up and scored twice before Sharrock added the icing on the cake with a final try for Field.
Solid performances from each and every Field player who to a man did their job, including; Casson, Barden, Far, Wiggins and Marsh but worth a special mention was the impressive debut from Powell and the superb tacking of Potter. Brophy also adding 4 conversions. Basingstoke were a quality side and showed why they are respected but ultimately were to succumb to sustained pressure and resolve from their counterparts. Whilst each side will reflect on what they could have done better, it was good game of rugby with Field running out winners 53 - 27 at the final whistle.
