Peef 2’s secure impressive win…

Petersfield 2’s were looking for a step up in team cohesion following a loss 2 weeks ago that they felt they should have won.

Winning the toss Field opted to play into and against the strong prevailing wind.

With only 14 players to start Field responded well to the scrum half's call for simplicity and to just secure ball with structured pod play from the forwards before more expansive play, and thus dominated the first quarter of the match in terms of possession and territory. Within 5 minutes Fields centre Thomas incurred an injury that forced him leave to match, nonetheless with just 13 men the organised play from Field and continued pressure told and following their forwards stretching the defence quick ball to the backs enabled Flett to put Giles in for the opening try,

Field should probably have scored more before Overton managed to battle their way back into the match, and using the wind to their advantage, respond with a try of their own that was duly converted.

A few onslaughts from the hosts were repelled by the visitors and a steal and break by Flett nudged Field back ahead. Once again building on the forwards work with fast ball to the backs, and the interchange between the same, led to Powell pushing Field ahead again converted by Flett. Undeterred Overton used the wind advantage to gain territory and eventually drive over to end the half 17 - 14 in favour of Field.

In the second half Field were to dominate and early on the ever forceful Kemp took the ball in at a line out and then powered over to score and set the tempo. With Bremner now on the park, and with the wind assisting, the conversion was well taken from a tight angle.

Now at full strength on the pitch and with the strong wind advantage; Field were to exert more pressure and Farr taking the ball over the gain line, accepting the tackle hit but with a deft offload, released Bremner to score. Powell was to also benefit from the hard work by the forwards including a proper shift put in by pack leader Coombes-Excell. Flett was to further add to his tally and Bremner did not miss any of the conversions taking the score pretty much out of reach of the home side. Overton who stuck to the task were to score what turned out to be a consolation try but ultimately succumbed to the more aggressive and well structured play form the visitors. In what was close to the last play of the match Field executed a set play from their own 22 that nearly resulted in a specular try finish only for the ball to be fumbled whilst in hand. Nonetheless Field ran out clear and deserved winners 45 - 25.
