Last Friday marked a truly special evening in support of one of the most prominent rugby charities in the country. Over recent years, Rugby Against Cancer has grown into one of the UK’s most inspiring charitable organisations, embodying its mission to “harness the power of the rugby community to enhance the lives of those with cancer.”
Founded by Portsmouth RFC captain and legend Aaron “Badger” Beesley, the charity began as a heartfelt response to the diagnosis of one of Beesley’s close friends. Since its inception, Rugby Against Cancer has raised over £30,000 to support individuals and families most affected by the disease. The charity has forged partnerships with rugby royalty, including Bath Rugby and Nottingham Rugby, and has even attracted support from stars like Marcus Smith and Luke Wallace.
Rugby Against Cancer’s work extends far beyond financial aid. It unites the rugby family to provide critical services such as respite stays at the RAC Shack, memory-making experiences, grants for personal aid, and support kit bags. Their efforts ensure that no one in the rugby community faces cancer alone. Beyond direct support, the charity also raises awareness through fundraising events, seasonal campaigns, and challenges that inspire action across the rugby world.
Each February, Rugby Against Cancer paints the rugby landscape pink, white, and blue through its annual Sock Takeover campaign. Clubs across the country don their iconic socks to show solidarity and raise funds. This year, every team at Petersfield RFC took part, with the club purchasing the second-highest number of socks nationwide, raising an incredible £4,300 for the cause.
Last year, Rugby Against Cancer’s success extended to the pitch, where they clinched the prestigious Petersfield Pub 7s tournament title, adding to their back-to-back victories at the Bournemouth 7s, the world’s largest sports festival.
The charity’s latest feat was a thrilling charity match last Friday, which brought together a dream team of rugby talent. Under the lights at Rosslyn Park’s state-of-the-art artificial pitch, Rugby Against Cancer faced off against an All-Star line-up from National League outfit Rosslyn Park. The Rugby Against Cancer squad included Petersfield’s own Dan Sargent, Liam Perkins, Joe Atkinson, and Tom Land, alongside Harlequins legend Luke Wallace, Rob Kirby at fly-half, and Havant RFC icon Steve Cruddas. In front of over 700 spectators, the match delivered an electrifying spectacle. Rugby Against Cancer emerged victorious with a 34-29 win, featuring a brace from Tom Land and even a try from charity founder Aaron Beesley himself.
Petersfield RFC takes immense pride in its members’ contributions to this incredible cause. From wearing the socks to representing the club in the All-Star game, our players and supporters have embodied the spirit of something far bigger than rugby. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the lads who played in the charity match and eagerly anticipate watching this remarkable charity continue to grow.
Rugby Against Cancer’s next major event will be a Family Fun Day on 28th June at Penns Place, where everyone is welcome to celebrate the charity’s outstanding work. Additionally, they’ll be returning to this year’s Pub 7s tournament, aiming to defend their title as back-to-back champions.
