Growing up in Northern Ireland from the age of 4, Bernard was heavily involved in sport, including swimming, athletics, squash but especially Rugby. Bernard started playing Rugby at the age of 6 and Captained his school rugby teams from the age of 12. Bernie's talents were also seen beyond the school gates where he represented Ulster and Ireland, Captaining both teams in 1984.
Bernie led an Irish Schools XV to an undefeated campaign against Scotland and England. Only the second time in Schools Rugby history that Ireland had defeated England, who were Captained by some bloke called Will Carling. On his return to the mainland, Bernard played for London Irish for two years before a spinal injury forced him to take a break from the game.
Bernie's playing career resumed with Colchester RFC in 1989 where he also became actively involved in the administration of the club as Chairman. He also managed to fit in a stint as head coach of the Senior section after the departure of the incumbent and piloted the side as they maintained their League status.
Bernie's impressive rugby CV includes time served as Head Coach at both Fareham Heathens and Southampton RFC where he helped both sides to attain and then maintain their presence in Hants 1, and established the Heathens' Academy. Never one to rest on his laurels, Bernie has also taken on the roles of DoR and Chairman at Heathens were he actively helped develop the coaching capability across the club.
Bernie is qualified to RFU Level 2 Coaching standard and successfully completed the RFU Leadership Academy in 2017/18.
Joining us for the 2018/19 season, Bernie already has his hands full as he takes on the position of Club Disciplinary Secretary and Club Representative at Hants RFU, in addition to being Director of Rugby.
