It is with deep sadness that Petersfield Rugby Club announces the passing of one of its most cherished and legendary figures - Mike Garner.
Mike first joined the club in the mid-1970s, alongside his brother Tim, and quickly made his mark both on and off the pitch. A formidable presence in the 1st XV for over 16 years, Mike went on to represent the 2nd XV and Vets with equal pride, embodying the spirit of Petersfield RFC at every level.
But it was off the field where Mike’s influence was just as profound. A founding member of the famous CHOCS Committee, he played a crucial role in building our beloved clubhouse in 1989. His tireless fundraising efforts and unwavering commitment were instrumental not only in making the clubhouse a reality, but in supporting numerous other club projects over the years.
Known affectionately as a Tour Organiser, a Social Monster, and above all, a gentleman, Mike was the kind of person who lit up a room - always generous, always supportive, and always with time for others. His dedication and service were formally recognised in 2019, when he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award and made a Vice President of the club - honours he wore with quiet pride.
Mike’s passing leaves a deep hole in the heart of our club, and he will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to his wife Carla, children Dani and Alex, his brother Tim, and the wider Garner family.
A funeral service to celebrate Mike’s life will take place on Wednesday 18th June at 10:45am at The Oaks Crematorium, PO9 5NA, followed by a reception at The Tithe Barn, Old Ditcham Farm, GU31 5RQ. All who knew Mike are warmly invited to attend. Guests are kindly asked to dress smartly, with a twist of colour, in tribute to Mike’s vibrant character.
Mike - thank you for everything. Your legacy is woven into the fabric of this club and always will be.
