Affectionately known as “Perky” around Penns Place, Liam has played a pivotal role in the development and progression of the men’s section during his time at the club. Arriving in the summer of 2023, he made an immediate impact, helping guide the 1st XV to promotion in his first season alongside Director of Rugby Matt McLean.
On the field, Liam has made 46 appearances, crossing the whitewash 24 times. This is a remarkable return that reflects both his quality and consistency. Beyond the numbers, his leadership, physicality and understanding of the game have helped set the standard within the squad.
Off the pitch, his influence has been just as significant. Liam’s experience of playing at a high level has been invaluable in shaping the environment, raising expectations and developing players during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Club Chairman Stuart Barden said:
“Since the moment he walked through the door, Liam has been nothing short of outstanding for Petersfield. His coaching ability, his connection with players and the presence he brings on the field have all played a huge part in the club’s success over the past few years.
I always knew this moment would come. Liam has been open about his ambitions in coaching and now, as he steps away from playing, he does so with our full support and a great deal of affection as he takes up the role of Forwards Coach at Worthing.
Thank you, Liam. You are a star. We wish you the very best in your coaching journey and you will always be welcome back at Penns Place.”
Liam now returns to Worthing Raiders, a club where he previously enjoyed great success, to begin the next chapter of his rugby journey in coaching. He brings his playing career to a close after competing at an elite level, including in the second tier of English rugby.
Worthing currently compete one league above Petersfield in Regional 1 and will be pushing for a return to the National Leagues in the 2026/27 season. We are confident Liam will make a significant impact and wish him every success in his new role.
Since joining the club, Liam has represented Petersfield RFC with professionalism, commitment and pride. His contribution both on and off the field has left a lasting mark, and he departs with the gratitude and respect of everyone connected to the club.
On a more personal note, Perky, you have been far more than just a player or coach during your time here. You have been a leader, a presence and a huge part of what makes this club what it is. The door is always open and you will always have a place at Penns Place.
All the very best for what comes next, and do not be a stranger.
