Everything You Need to Know About Women’s Rugby at Petersfield RFC

James Barden30 Aug - 14:37

On Tuesday, 23 women’s players stepped foot on the pitches at Penns Place for the first time in over 20 years.

What was merely a dream in January has now become a reality – and the buzz has been absolutely fantastic!

Women’s rugby at Petersfield RFC is gathering momentum at pace. With dedicated coaches, a strong support network, and exciting opportunities both on and off the pitch, the programme is designed to give players the best possible rugby experience.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Training Times

The women’s team now trains twice a week at Penns Place:

Tuesday evenings: 7:00–8:30pm on Pitch 4

Thursday evenings: 7:00–8:30pm on Pitch 2

The Sunday session have now been move to Thursday evenings, allowing players to enjoy post-training dinners together at the clubhouse - a tradition that has long been part of the senior men’s culture at Petersfield.

The Support Team

One of the biggest strengths of the new women’s programme is the team working behind the scenes to make sure players are supported both on and off the pitch.

Team Manager – Amie Boyes

Amie is the backbone of the women’s team. She takes on the crucial (and often thankless) job of managing all administration, membership, and organisation. From ensuring players are registered with the RFU to coordinating logistics and answering the dreaded Spond messages, Amie is the point of contact for everything off the pitch. Her role ensures the coaches and players can focus on rugby, knowing that the details are handled.

If you have any questions for Amie, contact her here!

Head Coach – Cam Thomas

Cam leads the rugby programme for the women’s squad. His focus is on helping players thrive on the pitch, whether they are brand new to the game or returning after time away. Cam brings positive energy, knowledge, and a player-centred approach to coaching, ensuring that every session balances enjoyment with development. His long-term aim is to create a team identity built on confidence, skillset, and resilience.

Player Welfare & Social Secretary – Esther

Esther plays a dual role that’s central to the women’s rugby culture. As Welfare Officer, she is there to ensure that players are happy, settling in, and supported – both in rugby and beyond. As Social Secretary, she is also responsible for making sure the team enjoys the off-field side of rugby, organising socials that bring the squad closer together. On top of that, Esther supports content on the women’s rugby social media channels, capturing the moments that showcase the team’s shenanigans.

Equipment Manager – Gerry

Gerry looks after everything kit-related, from playing kit to training equipment. His role ensures that every training session and match runs smoothly, with everything set up and ready to go. Known for his enthusiasm, Gerry is also one of the loudest supporters on the sidelines – often with a drum in hand to cheer the team on.

Marketing Director – James

Oversees the wider marketing efforts of Petersfield RFC, including the digital coverage of the women’s rugby programme. From graphics and matchday content to club-wide campaigns, his work ensures the women’s team has a strong presence across platforms.

James also heads up the sponsorship efforts at Petersfield RFC and is a point of contact for anything related to the commercial side of Petersfield RFC.

TikTok Admin – Chase Thomas

Runs the club’s TikTok channel and helps capture the fun, creative side of the game. Chase also plays an important role in exploring brand collaborations that can bring added benefits to the squad.

Additional roles such as Social Media Admin and Fixtures Admin will be introduced as the team continues to grow.

Membership

Membership is a core requirement for all players, covering RFU insurance and contributing towards the running of the team.

For the 2025/26 season, membership also includes:

  • Post-match meals after every game.
  • Thursday night training dinners (once Sunday training shifts to Thursdays in October).
  • Professional Media Day access - every player receives a series of high-quality headshots taken by the club’s photographer. These are used across match graphics and also provided for personal use.

Cost: £120 per season, payable in full or in monthly instalments of £10. Financial support is available if needed.

Strength & Conditioning

  • Players will also benefit from a dedicated Strength & Conditioning programme led by Katy Bishop (Gladiator Camp's very own Viking!).

Cost: £25 per year.
Includes unlimited access to the club gym, via a personal fob.
This provides an affordable way for players to complement their rugby training with structured fitness support.

Sponsorship

We have been lucky enough to secure sponsorship from three incredibly generous companies who believe in the growth of women’s rugby at Petersfield:

  • LGW – front-of-shirt sponsor for the women’s team this season, as part of a wider club Principal Partnership.
  • House of Boo – an award-winning local salon built on inspiring women, now proudly investing in the women’s programme.
  • Mile Digital – a local music distribution company who have also invested, completing the match kit sponsorship.

These partnerships highlight the strength of community backing for the team, but we are still looking for additional sponsors to support the women’s section. If you are interested in getting involved, please [contact us here].

Player Sponsorship

From the 2025/26 season, Petersfield RFC has introduced individual player sponsorships for the women’s squad.

Sponsorship fee: £300 per player.
Benefits for players: Sponsorship covers membership and S&C costs, while also providing free personalised Petersfield RFC stash.

Benefits for businesses: Visibility across club platforms, association with the women’s rugby programme, and the opportunity to directly support grassroots sport.
The club’s ambition is for every player to be sponsored, with several businesses already signed up. If a player has already paid their membership before securing sponsorship, their membership fee will be refunded once sponsorship is confirmed.

More information on player partnerships can be found in the document attached to this article.

The Bigger Picture

In the first few months, the focus will be on teaching the squad the fundamentals of rugby, with the aim of playing a first game in October. When the new year rolls around, the plan is to host a double-header in front of a sold-out Ladies Lunch – with the 1st XV kicking off at the usual 3pm, before the main event of the women’s game under the floodlights.

Looking further ahead, the 2026/27 season – Petersfield RFC’s centenary year – will see the women’s team step into competitive rugby, as the squad plans to formally enter the women’s rugby pyramid.
