Mike was a member of Petersfield RFC for more than 70 years and was instrumental in shaping the club in its current form, both on and off the field. His contribution spanned generations and his influence can still be felt throughout the club today.
Mike first came into contact with Petersfield RFC through his family, as his parents owned the Welcome Inn in Petersfield, which served as the club’s base before moves to the Red Lion and eventually to its own clubhouse at Penns Place. From those early days, Mike became deeply embedded in the life and culture of the club.
On the field, Mike captained the 1st XV between 1963 and 1965 and played for the club for over 15 years. He led with quiet authority and commitment, earning the respect of teammates and opponents alike.
His most significant and enduring contribution, however, came away from the pitch. Mike was a key member of the CHOCS Committee between 1987 and 1989, the group of club heroes responsible for building the clubhouse. When it became clear that the club did not have the funds to pay for a roofing contractor, Mike famously stepped forward and declared that the roof would be put on regardless. True to his word, he rolled up his sleeves and made it happen, a moment that has since become part of club folklore.
Mike also helped to secure land leases for the club’s pitches with local councils. This work provided long term stability for the club and remains a vital part of its foundations.
He later served as Club President from 1991 to 1996, offering a steady hand during a period of growth and change as the club settled into its new facilities. In the years that followed, Mike took on the role of Club Elder Statesman, a position he held for the past 20 years, continuing to offer wisdom, guidance and unwavering support.
Mike Hackman will be deeply missed by everyone connected with Petersfield RFC. His dedication, humility and lifelong service leave a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.
Mike’s beloved wife, Marilyn, has kindly invited all friends of Petersfield RFC to join her in Emsworth to celebrate Mike’s life.
