Preview | 'Field Host League Leaders Winchester for a Festive GW12

James Barden12 Dec - 16:00

Benj Guy gives all the permutations ahead of tomorrow's big home clash with Winchester.

It’s going to be a wet and windy one tomorrow as the Red and Green welcome table toppers Winchester to Penns Place for a December fixture.

Currently atop of the Regional 2 South Central league, Winchester have had a stormer of a season, with their only loss of the season last weekend against 2nd placed Bournemouth. Despite this loss, they still sit in the top spot due to their abundance of try bonus points (9 of a possible 11). With 423 points scored to 186 conceded, they comfortably have the best points differential in the league.

Over the last 3 seasons, the city team have consistently been in the race for promotion but alongside the constant reformation of the league structure, they have been unfortunate to not proceed with their goals. If their first half of the season is anything to go off, this could be the year to break the mould and advance to Regional 1. With strong academy and school links in their area, this is a team known for developing players, with England international Joe Marchant being the most noticeable. Further strong ties with Peter Symonds College, recently becoming an ACE college, attracts players to Winchester RFC.

Taking a look at Petersfield going into this game, there was no fixture last week as the pitches at Penns Place faced a battering over the week, as the weather seemed to face no end. Thankfully, due to the work of the legendary Chris Todd and the wonderful team at Churchers College for allowing us to train there, the pitch will be ready to welcome Winchester. There is the chance for Field to push into 6th place tomorrow with a win, a challenge the team are happy to face.

The squad this week sees a handful of changes in position and personnel, but one position that isn’t moving is of course - Jackson Clark at loosehead prop. The Hampshire representative continues his impressive availability and will be hoping to make a dent in an experienced Winchester frontrow. Recent convert Will Norton joins him and is partnered by captain Dan Sargent. Franko Tomic rejoins the fold at second row with Zac Conley packing down next to him for a tremendous second row duo. Jack Janaway enters the starting mix after an impressive performance at Havant, seeing him cross the white line. Karter Whittock continues to remain present in the back row, with Liam Perkins at 8 for his usual carrying strength.

Dan Chinnock retains his usual position at scrum-half, coming leaps and bounds in his first full mens season. For the first time this season, Tom Blewitt takes the reigns at fly-half as Brad Caparo recovers from an injury suffered in the previous fixture. In the centres, despite the best efforts of Andy Patience, Greg Jansen remains a back and is joined by DoR Matt McLean. Charlie Muir transitions to the wing for the game, accompanied by Eddie Matthews. Whilst at fullback, Joe Knowles earns a starting position at fullback, hoping to put his wide skillset to good use.

It is a bench packed with strength and experience, as Sam Brown provides crucial front row cover, Alex Robinson brings vital power and speed to the back row and Miles Sampson possesses the ability to comfortably slot just about anywhere in the backline if needed.
