PREVIEW | Petersfield Women Seek Redemption Against Salisbury

Holly Allsop Gives All The Details On Petersfield Women's Upcoming Match Against Salisbury This Sunday

Just as the seasons are starting to change and the sun is waking up from its winter hiatus, Petersfield Women look towards a fixture against a team that, three months prior, left them wanting more. Anyone present for the Salisbury Spitfires Vs. Petersfield Women's game last November will remember the heartache and deflation felt by the team after a 21-0 loss, their first one since their relaunch in the summer.

However, once the Rams had licked their wounds and regrouped at Penns Place in the weeks following, the team quickly realised that this was a wake-up call that couldn’t be snoozed. Head Coach Cam Thomas immediately focused his team on perfecting tackle technique, speed into contact, and confidence going into collisions, all in order to prepare his players for the increasingly physical games that lay ahead of them.

The stark difference between the Petersfield team that played Salisbury on November 16th, and the Petersfield team heading into their home fixture this weekend is the epitome of growth and determination. Players have not only committed to their continual training and development over the last 14 weeks, but have demonstrated this on the pitch, with a resounding win against Aldershot & Fleet in January and a mere 3-point loss to Andover last weekend. The resilience shown by this relatively new team bodes well for their second meeting with the Spitfires at Penns Place on Sunday.

The success of this Salisbury side cannot go unspoken, though, with an undeniable 30-5 win against Andover in January and an impressive second-half comeback against Bath University 2nd XV back in December. Despite the budding (friendly) rivalry between these two teams, they do have one major thing in common. Both these teams were formed in Summer of 2025, proving that excellent grassroots women’s rugby is thriving, and that there is a definitely expanding market for local women’s rugby across the country. The Ram’s determination to steal a win back from the visitors this weekend is fuelled by the team’s desire to play a brilliant 70 minutes of rugby and showcase the sheer amount of work that has gone on behind the scenes.

The ‘Field squad looking to make their mark on Penns Place’s first pitch this Sunday starts with the undeniable forces of Daisy Plant, Charlie Wolfe, and Laura Pinder as the front row. Locking in at 4 and 5 are Lucy Barton and Lara Hinson, two powerhouses who aren’t afraid of getting stuck in. Flanking for ‘Field will be number 6 Chennai O’Reilly and number 7 Esther Figgins, followed by number 8 and team captain, Leanne Wallis. Expect this group to pack a punch, and set up the backs for a (fingers crossed) try-fest this weekend.

Coming in at number 9 for the first time, taking a vacation from her usual spot at number 6, is Maz Gregory, who will undoubtedly make her mark on the game. Following in the fly-half position will be Hannah Wright - right where she belongs. At 11 is Petersfield Women’s prize try-scorer Holly Mullard, with inside centre Maddy Hall bidding to bring home the bacon at 12. Tegan Kinch, the conversion queen, will sit at her usual seat at 13, with Rachael Hunt ready to track down some spitfires at 14. Our very own track star Kam Carty will take up the fullback position to round off this incredible line up.

If that wasn’t enough firepower, we have the likes of Naia Boyes, Emma Ward, Kacey Andrews, Skye Shepherd, Becky Steer, and Cara Lewis ready to step up to the plate as impact players.

This is building up to be a match that could swing either way, so please get on down to Penns Place to get behind the ladies and cheer them into another victory!

Petersfield Women will face Salisbury ‘Spitfires’ on Sunday 1st March at Petersfield RFC at 2pm.
