Report | ‘Field Hit 48 To Secure First Win of the Season

James Barden

Petersfield collect all five points at Broadwater Park with an eight-try thriller ending 48-26 in ‘Field’s favour.

Chris Todd reports from Broadwater Park as Petersfield secured their first victory of the 2026/27 Regional 2 South Central campaign with a 48-26 win over Guildford.

Arriving at Guildford’s Broadwater Park ground, Petersfield found a playing surface that had suffered severely from the recent drought. Despite valiant efforts from the hosts, the pitch was largely comprised of bare earth, with grass remaining in areas that had seen less playing traffic.

Those conditions did little to prevent both sides demonstrating their desire to play an open, running game throughout the afternoon.

Playing down the slope, Guildford started on the front foot and took both possession and territory into Petersfield’s half. For the opening ten minutes, ‘Field defended stoically, with only occasional opportunities to venture into opposition territory.

Petersfield enjoyed some success at the lineout, notably through Eddie Jordan, but their advances were repeatedly snuffed out by a determined Guildford defence.

After 12 minutes, the hosts finally found a breakthrough. From a maul on Petersfield’s twenty-two, Guildford moved the ball towards their right wing, where their pace out wide proved enough to evade the defence and score. The conversion followed (7-0).

Petersfield responded after Guildford knocked on near their own twenty-two. Alert outside centre Seb Tuff pounced on the loose ball, gathered cleanly and made twenty metres before being brought down. Tuff found the supporting Matt McLean, who dived over the line to open Petersfield’s account.

New recruit Lewis New calmly converted to bring the scores level (7-7).

A series of Guildford penalties then presented ‘Field with an opportunity to move ahead, with New asked to kick for points from in front of the posts. The fly-half duly obliged to give Petersfield their first lead of the afternoon (7-10).

Petersfield soon struck again. A grubber kick was fumbled by a Guildford defender, with the ball finding its way through his legs before McLean reacted quickest. The centre gathered and acrobatically touched down for his second try of the afternoon, with New adding the extras (7-17).

An injury to Eddie Jordan forced Petersfield into a reshuffle, with Alex Robinson moving from the wing to No.8, Tim Vreysen switching to flanker and Archie Whitear entering the action on the wing.

The changes did little to halt Petersfield’s momentum.

Tuff was on hand to collect another loose ball outside the Guildford twenty-two before pinning his ears back, accelerating away from the defence, evading two tackles and shrugging off a third to score underneath the posts. New converted once again (7-24).

Guildford responded from the restart, advancing down their left in front of the clubhouse. A series of rucks eventually produced quick ball for the hosts, allowing their full-back to race down the five-metre channel and outstrip the Petersfield defence to score in the corner. The conversion was missed (12-24).

That remained the score at half-time, with Petersfield heading into the changing rooms holding a 12-point advantage.

Guildford made the perfect start to the second period. Petersfield failed to compete in the air from the restart, allowing the hosts to secure possession and work through a series of passes before crossing underneath the posts for their third try. The conversion reduced Petersfield’s advantage to five points (19-24).

‘Field’s response was emphatic.

From inside their own half, forwards and backs combined to ride tackles and keep the ball alive before possession eventually found its way into the hands of McLean.

The centre set off on one of his typically mazy runs, jinking around defenders off both feet with Joe Knowles tracking in support on his outside. With the try line beckoning, McLean unselfishly released his captain, who finished underneath the posts. New converted (19-31).

Ryan Morse was next to make an impact with one of his trademark bullocking carries, setting up quick ruck ball for Petersfield.

Possession was worked to Knowles, who produced a run reminiscent of McLean’s moments earlier, avoiding tackles and handing off a defender before crossing twenty metres in from the right touchline. The increasingly impressive left boot of New added another conversion (19-38).

Petersfield then added three points in a far less conventional fashion.

After securing possession from a Guildford scrum following a Petersfield lineout not thrown straight, ‘Field worked the ball back infield. From 25 metres out and directly in front of the posts, McLean elected to attempt a drop goal and struck successfully, a feature of play rarely seen at Level 6 (19-41).

With the scoreboard firmly in their favour, Petersfield used the slope intelligently, repeatedly kicking deep into the corner and presenting their hosts with the challenge of playing from inside their own territory.

McLean then completed an excellent individual afternoon.

Positioned underneath a kick in front of the posts, the centre collected possession and crossed the line to complete his hat-trick and take his personal tally to 18 points. New added the conversion to bring up 48 points for ‘Field (19-48).

Guildford continued to play until the end and were rewarded in the closing minutes. Their backs, and notably the centre pairing, combined to split the Petersfield defence and score underneath the posts.

The conversion completed the scoring and secured Guildford a try bonus point as the referee brought proceedings to a close (26-48).

Five well-deserved league points return to Penns Place from a much-changed Petersfield side, providing a significant confidence boost both to those selected at Broadwater Park and those currently injured or otherwise unavailable from the senior squad.

ELSEWHERE

Round Two produced another remarkable afternoon across Regional 2 South Central, with three sides emerging from the weekend with perfect records and Petersfield climbing to seventh following their first victory of the campaign.

The standout scoreline came in Dorset, where Wimborne produced an extraordinary 92-0 victory over newly promoted Bognor. Having won 33-24 at Havant II on the opening weekend, Wimborne now sit top of the division with ten points and a points difference of +101 after just two matches.

Old Tiffinians are alongside them on ten points after winning the battle of the opening weekend’s top two. A 38-23 victory over Weybridge Vandals maintains their perfect start and leaves them second on points difference.

Tottonians make up the early top three after recording another maximum-point victory. Having squeezed past Twickenham by just two points in Round One, they were far more convincing this weekend, beating Camberley 61-21 to move to ten points.

After their shock opening-day defeat to newly promoted Bognor, title favourites Winchester responded with an impressive 31-12 victory away at Chobham. They move up to sixth, one place above Petersfield, with both sides now sitting on five league points.

Havant II recorded their first victory of the season with a 44-20 win over Twickenham, moving them into fourth on six points.

Petersfield’s bonus-point victory at Guildford sees ‘Field climb to seventh, with five points separating the top nine after two rounds. Guildford and Camberley remain without a victory, while Twickenham sit tenth despite collecting two bonus points across their opening fixtures.

With Wimborne, Old Tiffinians and Tottonians the only sides maintaining perfect records, the opening fortnight continues to suggest Regional 2 South Central could be considerably more unpredictable than in recent seasons.
