PRFC: Liam, thank you for speaking with us this week, firstly, let’s talk about last week’s win against Wimborne. How good was that?
Liam: I think it was our best all round performance of the season, and it was just what we needed as a group. We have a lot of the teams below us coming up at home, so if we can do well in those games and also pick up points away from home against those above us, we should see a positive conclusion to the campaign.
PRFC: The boys have started to pick up some momentum in the past few games, what are you expecting from today’s clash with Andover?
Liam: We have a score to settle having put in arguably our worst performance of the past two seasons when we played them away earlier in the season. I’m expecting more of the same of what we showed against Wimborne; honest hard work, enterprising open play in the backs, and dominance in the set piece
PRFC: Another try last Saturday puts your score count up to 7 so far this season, are you going to try and catch Sarge or are you happy with what you have already?
Liam: I gave up trying to keep up with sarges try scoring prowess a decade ago! It’s been great seeing sarge keeping his scoring run going, it’s such an asset to the team - he’s playing some of his best rugby I’ve seen in 12 years of playing alongside him, he’s ageing like a fine wine! Personally, if I finish with double figures and the odd drop goal, I’ll be happy.
PRFC: A few big fixtures coming up on the road with a trip to league leaders Farnham in two weeks time. How do you feel this momentum can help in those big clashes?
Liam: We’ve had a stop start season, and I’m sure we will look back at the end of the season with a “what might have been” viewpoint. We’ve came so close to the top teams, a bounce of the ball, or a decision going our way in a few of those games, and we would have come away with more points. The challenge we’ve given to the lads is to approach away games in the same way we do home games - and try to replicate that atmosphere we get from the sidelines at Penns Place, from within our own circle when we play away from home.
PRFC: Finally, we sit in 6th place right now in our first season at this level, what will feel like a success to you come the end of the season?
Liam: Coming into this season, we didn’t set any goals to the squad, in an attempt to not put too much pressure on the players, but my personal aim coming into this season was to finish in the top half - which I think is a hell of an achievement for any team newly promoted. But I do think we have enough, when we tick all the boxes, to compete with the top 4. We certainly have many standout players in this league who can go toe to toe with players across this league, and when we manage to knit it all together, we can beat anyone.
