The Touchline Echo | A Foreword From Chairman Stuart Barden

James Barden1 Feb - 11:43

Stuart Barden Gives Us The Rundown Ahead Of Today's Fixtures!

Welcome to Penns Place for what promises to be a fantastic afternoon of rugby—starting here with the 1st XV and finishing later in Dublin. Let’s hope for a home win here and an away win in Ireland, which you can catch on the TV in the clubhouse.

Today, we welcome Chobham RFC, a club we used to play home and away before the introduction of league rugby. This season marks the first time we’ve met in 32 years. After a very tough away loss earlier in the season, the boys will be looking to settle the score this afternoon.

A very warm welcome to Giles Cleverley and the Syn-Star Massif, our club’s main sponsors and today’s lunch sponsors. Syn-Star have been an incredible support to Petersfield RFC in recent years, and your contributions are truly appreciated—thank you!

We’d also like to welcome Andy Martin of Marengo and his guests. Not only are they Club 83 members, but they’ve also sponsored the Youth Strength & Conditioning programme, including the T-shirts worn by the 140 boys and girls participating. It’s arguably the best initiative the club has undertaken this year, and the participants look incredibly smart in their new gear—thank you, Andy!

A big welcome as well to Alex Groves, Petersfield playing legend and sponsor, along with his now-traditional two tables of revellers. We look forward to seeing you all safely into taxis later!

The 1st XV’s resurgence continued last week with a strong win against Andover in a rearranged fixture, following a narrow and unlucky defeat to Farnham, where we dominated much of the game but lost to a last-minute breakaway try. The boys are fired up for today’s clash—let’s hope for another great performance.

Today also marks a special occasion for our Under-9s, who are enjoying the Match Day Experience. They’ve been coached this morning by 1st XV players and coaches and will serve as ball boys during the game. A big shout-out to the U9s joining us for lunch today—it’s moments like these that remind us Petersfield RFC is truly one club, united from top to bottom.

On Pitch 3, the Mighty 2s take on a strong US Portsmouth 1st XV. After a narrow defeat to table-topping Millbrook last week, they’ll be hoping to bounce back with a big result—let’s show them our support!

It’s with great sadness that we share the passing of one of Petersfield RFC’s most memorable characters, Mark Hipsey, who lost his long battle with cancer this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah, Alice, and Will during this difficult time.

The weather has, once again, disrupted training for all age groups this week. Despite this, we’ll see our usual strong turnout tomorrow for Mini and Youth Rugby. The Colts head to Trojans for what promises to be a thrilling game, the U15s host Bournemouth, and the U14 Girls travel to Hungerford. Best of luck to all teams!
This week also sees the launch of advertising for the 2025 Pub 7s (4th May). Things have come a long way since our single advert in the Petersfield Post, so keep an eye on social media for updates—it’s going to be bigger than ever!
