Penns Place once again became a small part of Fiji on Saturday as the UK Fijians 7s & 10-a-side tournament returned to Petersfield RFC.

To add even more spice to an already sizzling sporting event, the hundred-plus players contesting the regular 7s and 10-a-side “Masters” competition, (for players aged 35-years plus), were subject to scorching temperatures and a rock-hard pitch.

Anyone who thought that the conditions would slow the players down were soon disabused of the notion, as what followed was a feast of high octane rugby, played with 100% commitment.

In addition to the Fijian families and friends enthusiastically supporting their teams, there was a large contingent of locals taking advantage of the event to witness sport played the way it should be; with heart and soul and the highest level of sporting conduct.

This year, the Nakelo Spartans took the honours in the 10s competition with RA Rooster and Tokatoka UK, taking the Bowl and Plate respectively. In the Cup final, new boys Wainimala Boys defeated the returning Nadroga Stallions with Adre Vasuitoga adjudged to be the “Player of the Final”.

The trophies were presented by Mrs Hilary Eyre, Mayor of Petersfield, returning for her second year running.

The next event at PRFC on Sunday the 12th of August is the second of three rugby 'taster' sessions for Girls run by England and Harlequins scrum-half, Leanne Riley.
