At the club’s Annual General Meeting back in September, a whole host of topics were aired, but one moment towered above the rest: the election of these five new Vice Presidents. For everyone gathered at tomorrow’s lunch, this is a chance to recognise them properly and celebrate their place among a group many of you proudly call your own.
As you all know, becoming a Vice President of Petersfield RFC isn’t a casual badge of honour. It’s a mark of exceptional service – the sort of commitment, passion, and influence that changes the club for the better. Some have distinguished themselves through years of rugby; others have moved mountains behind the scenes. All five have left a genuine imprint on Petersfield RFC.
Jolene Sims
We begin with someone who is, quite genuinely, the heartbeat of our clubhouse. As Clubhouse Manager, Jolene has delivered first-rate hospitality week after week for nearly a decade. From bustling Saturday lunches to feeding an entire youth army every Sunday, she keeps the ship afloat. She washes every kit, runs event after event, and this year even took on the club shop. Jolene is nothing short of a superhero – and Petersfield RFC runs on the sheer energy she pours into it.
Justin Whitear
Our second inductee, Justin Whitear, has been a near-permanent fixture at Penns Place for decades. From coaching his son Archie through the age groups to becoming a familiar, trusted face on the balcony every Saturday, Justin rarely misses a game. Quietly supportive, endlessly loyal, and woven into the weekly rhythm of the club, Justin embodies the dependable spirit that holds Petersfield together.
Alex Groves
Next, we welcome Alex Groves – or “Mr Groves” to most. When he’s not trying his luck with outrageous drop-goals from halfway for the Vets (or stepping in for the 2nd XV this season), he’s on the touchline backing any side in red and green. With over two decades of rugby at the club and unwavering support through his business, Abacus Associates, Alex is one of those larger-than-life personalities who make Petersfield RFC what it is.
Laurence “Larry” Wood
Our fourth inductee is Laurence “Larry” Wood. After more than twenty years playing for the club, Larry continues to back Petersfield RFC as a Principal Partner through his company, LGW. A lively character in the clubhouse and a genuine believer in the club’s long-term ambitions, Larry is richly deserving of VP status and an undeniable part of the club’s story.
Robin Wood
And finally – far from least – Robin Wood. Father of Larry and a hugely influential figure in his own right, Robin has had a profound impact in recent years. Working closely with Chris Todd, he has helped drive numerous projects behind the scenes, while his beloved “Optimistic End” columns have become a fixture of club life. From commercial innovation to strategic input, Robin’s contribution has been tireless.
Together, our Class of 2025 Inductees personify everything Petersfield RFC stands for: commitment, character, generosity, and an unshakeable passion for the club’s future.
Tomorrow, we celebrate them not only for what they’ve already given, but for the legacy they continue to shape.
